The Chevrolet Malibu is a fine example of how a name can boost a product’s image. After all, the glamorous California beach town – known for its celebrities, surf, and sunshine – can only conjure up positive thoughts of a lifestyle that few people can actually achieve. The nameplate came to be as the performance-oriented trim level of the Chevrolet Chevelle in 1964 and then branched off in 1978 to become a separate model. Although the name was discontinued in 1983, GM revived it in 1997; today, it’s the sole sedan in Chevy’s lineup. The Malibu was last redesigned in 2016 to be sleeker, lighter, and more spacious, pleasing drivers who still prefer a traditional automobile to the endless sea of crossovers and SUVs. As we roll into model year 2022, the Malibu has been further streamlined as the former base trim level, the L, has been dropped, making the LS the entry-level choice.

Trims, Powertrains, and Fuel Economy

Chevrolet makes the Malibu in four trim levels: LS, RS, LT, and Premier. The LS, RS, and LT come with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that churns out 160 hp and is matched to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Meanwhile, the Premier receives a turbocharged 250 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder powerplant with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Every trim is front-wheel drive. The EPA has estimated that the LS, RS, and LT achieve 29 miles per gallon in the city and 36 mpg on the highway while the Premier gets 22 city/33 highway.

Standard Features by Trim Level

A slate of top-notch standard equipment makes the Malibu a truly cost-effective sedan. The LS is relatively basic with stuff like keyless entry and ignition, a 12-volt power outlet, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seatback, but the RS adds more appeal with its power driver’s seat and leather-wrapped steering wheel. The LT ups the ante with heated exterior mirrors, LED daytime running lights and taillights, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and remote start. The top-end Premier has the most upscale equipment: side mirrors with turn-signal indicators and position memory, a dual-pane sunroof, LED headlights, a 120-volt power outlet, a power front passenger’s seat, a charging-only USB port, driver’s seat memory, an HD rearview camera, a heated steering wheel, heated rear outboard seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, ambient interior lighting, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and a wireless smartphone charger.

Active Safety Technology

There are several driver-assist features available for the ’22 Malibu. The Driver Confidence I & II Package, which is optional for the LS, RS, and LT, will issue rear park assist, lane change alert with side blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, and front pedestrian detection. The Enhanced Driver Confidence Package for the Premier gets all of that plus adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist, and enhanced automatic emergency braking. All trims also receive OnStar & Chevrolet Connected Services (an in-vehicle safety and security system) and Teen Driver (a unique system that encourages better habits for new drivers).

Infotainment and Connectivity

The LS and RS get the base infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, voice recognition, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Chevrolet Connected Access, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a six-speaker audio system. The LT adds SiriusXM satellite radio, and the Premier is loaded with integrated navigation and a deluxe nine-speaker Bose sound system.
