It’s getting harder and harder to find a subcompact car, but the Chevrolet Spark lives on to fill that niche. This economical hatchback had its start in the late 1990s as the Korean-made Daewoo Matiz, which was popular in Europe. It evolved into the Spark after General Motors purchased the financially strapped Daewoo in April 2002. Today, it’s one of just two vehicles in the Chevrolet lineup that are neither a utility vehicle nor a truck. As long as there’s a subset of drivers who prefer the versatile hatchback body style and truly manageable pricing, the Spark will live on.

Trims and Powertrains

The subcompact Spark gets all the power it needs from its 98-horsepower 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which all four trims (the LS, 1LT, Activ, and 2LT) get. Buyers have a choice of transmissions: a 5-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). As you’d expect from a car in this segment, the Spark returns excellent fuel economy. The LS, 1LT, and 2LT with the manual shift get 29 mpg around town and 38 mpg on the highway; the Activ gets the same city mileage but drops an iota to 37 mpg on the highway. With the CVT, the Activ will achieve 30 city and 37 highway as rated by the EPA. The LS, 1LT, and 2LT equipped with the CVT are rated for 29 city/38 highway.

Standard Features and Options

The no-nonsense LS gets the most basic features, which include manual door locks and crank windows, two USB data ports, a 12V outlet, and cloth upholstery. The 1LT is enriched with keyless entry, cruise control, power exterior mirrors with heat, and power door locks and windows. The Activ lives up to its name with some sporty enhancements: a specially tuned suspension, black bumpers, a trim-specific grille, faux leather upholstery, and a steering wheel wrapped in leather. The 2LT literally shines with chrome trim, LED daytime running lights, and a deluxe driver information display. Buyers of the 1LT and 2LT can elect to add a sunroof.

Advanced Safety Technologies

Chevrolet has set up the 2022 Spark with a full complement of air bags, but the Driver Confidence Package is available for those who want to add some state-of-the-art active safety technologies: forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning. The top-of-the-line trim, the 2LT, comes with rear park assist, which alerts the driver to obstacles behind the vehicle during backing. Every trim gets OnStar, GM’s subscription-based communications service.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System is standard issue on every Spark. Its features, which can be controlled using the 7-inch touchscreen or voice recognition, consist of smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Bluetooth for hands-free phone use and audio streaming, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The LS gets four speakers for its sound system, while the higher trims all receive six speakers.
