Overview
The Chevrolet Trailblazer has a confident and youthful look inspired by the Camaro, helping to set it apart from the rest of the busy crossover class. Today’s generation, which began for model year 2021, is quite different from the original Chevy TrailBlazer (note the capital B), which was a truck-based SUV that was made from 2001 to 2008. The current Trailblazer uses unibody construction for smoother, more plush ride. Roof rails are available for increased utility, as is a trailering package that allows the vehicle to tow up to 1,000 pounds.
The Basics
The four trim levels of the 2022 Trailblazer are the LS, LT, Activ, and RS; front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional for all. The FWD versions of two lowest trims get the standard powertrain: a turbocharged 137 hp 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The two highest trims, as well as the lower trims with AWD, move up to a 155 hp turbocharged 1.3-liter three-cylinder with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
With FWD, the LS and LT are EPA-rated to return 29 mpg around town and 31 mpg in highway driving; AWD will cause the ratings to dip to 26 city/30 highway. The FWD Activ and RS will get 29 city/33 highway as estimated by the EPA; with AWD they will get 26 city/30 highway.
Standard Features
The base LS has everything it needs without a lot of extras. It gets cloth seats, auto on/off halogen headlights, LED daytime running lights, power side mirrors, 17-inch wheels, a basic infotainment system, and a bundle of driver-assist technologies (Chevy Safety Assist). The LT adds remote start, heated side mirrors, LED fog lights, deep-tinted rear windows, rooftop rails, a power driver’s seat, and keyless entry. The Activ gets some elements that earn it its name, such as sport terrain tires, a skid plate, and trim-specific exterior accents. It also has simulated leather seats, leather wrapping for the steering wheel and shifter knob, a center console with armrest for the back seat. The RS moves up to 18-inch wheels and adds black fascias and other exterior accents; its seats are upholstered in a combination of cloth and simulated leather.
Advanced Safety, and Infotainment Features
As we mentioned, Chevy Safety Assist is a standard feature on all 2022 Trailblazers. This comprehensive technology suite contains forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and a following distance indicator. Some additional technologies can be added via optional packages (keep reading for details). GM’s Teen Driver system is also standard. It encourages the development of safe driving habits by limiting certain vehicle functions (including audio system volume) and recording speeds and other data for parents to review later as a teaching tool.
The LS and LT have an infotainment system that can be controlled through voice recognition or its 7-inch touchscreen. Its features include wireless smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The sound system has six speakers. The version of the infotainment system found in the two higher trim levels has an 8-inch touchscreen.
Optional Packages
Chevrolet makes some optional packages available for the three highest trims of the Trailblazer. The LT, Activ, and RS can be equipped with the Sun and Liftgate Package, which adds a panoramic dual-pane sunroof and a hands-free liftgate. The Driver Confidence Package will augment the standard Chevy Safety Assist suite with the addition of rear park assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change alert with side blind-zone alert. The Convenience Package makes life easier with more USB ports, automatic cabin temperature control, a 120V power outlet, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and illuminated vanity mirrors. For AWD versions of the Trailblazer, the Trailering Package adds a trailer hitch and trailering harness (towing capacity: 1,000 lb.). Buyers of the Activ and RS can add the Technology Package for the 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging, a premium Bose sound system, high-definition radio, LED headlights, and adaptive cruise control.
