The ’23 Suburban is available in six trim levels: LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. Most come with a standard 5.3-liter V8 engine that produces 355 hp and 383 lb.-ft. of torque; however, a 6.2-liter V8 making 420 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque is optional for the Z71, RST, Premier, and High Country. Meanwhile, the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo diesel (277 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque) is available for the LS, LT, RST, and Premier and is standard with the High Country. All are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, and while rear-wheel drive is standard for most, four-wheel drive – which is standard in the Z71 – is available.
RWD Suburbans with the 5.3-liter V8 have been rated by the EPA to achieve 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. With the 6.2-liter V8, the around-town rating changes to 14 mpg, while those with the Duramax turbo diesel gain efficiency, achieving 21 city/27 highway. The 4WD models with the 5.3-liter V8 return 15 city/19 highway, and those with the 6.2-liter V8 fulfill 14 city/18 highway. The combination of 4WD and the turbo diesel powerplant returns 20 city/26 highway. Note that the configuration of RWD with the 5.3-liter V8 and Max Trailering Package can tow the most: up to 8,300 pounds. The maximum towing weights for all of the other configurations fall within 900 pounds of that limit.
The ’23 Suburban is packed with premium equipment. The LS receives heated side mirrors, roof-mounted side rails, deep-tinted rear glass, LED exterior lights, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry and ignition, three power outlets (one 12-volt and two 120-volt), six USB ports (one type-A and the remaining type-C), tri-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, illuminated vanity mirrors, and 60/40-split folding second- and third-row seatbacks. The LT gets a hands-free liftgate, heated and power-adjustable front seats, a 12-inch gauge cluster, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, leather front seats, and a wireless phone charger. The RST flaunts a sportier look with its black exterior accents and unique perforated leather seats.
The trailblazing Z71 gains several overlanding updates, including all-terrain tires, a high-approach angle front fascia, a two-speed transfer case, a heavy-duty air filter, hill descent control, a front skid plate, and red tow hooks. The Premier lacks the Z71’s exclusive off-road equipment but doubles down on the luxury with magnetic ride control (a comfort-enhancing suspension), polished wheels, a driver’s-side auto-dimming side mirror, chrome exterior accents, ventilated front seats, heated second-row outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, power-folding rear seats, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, a power-sliding center console, perforated leather upholstery, and position memory settings for the driver’s seat, steering wheel, and side mirrors. The High Country tops the range with a head-up display and a rear camera mirror with a built-in washer.
Safety is a leading attribute of the ’23 Suburban, which is why all trims have the Chevy Safety Assist suite (lane keep assist with lane departure warning, forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian detection, front and rear parking sensors, a following distance indicator, and automatic high beams). The Premier is upgraded with lane change alert, side blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and GM’s safety alert seat, which pulses in the direction of a potential accident. Meanwhile, the High Country welcomes enhanced automatic emergency braking, a surround-view camera, and rear pedestrian alert. All trims also receive the Teen Driver system (which encourages better driving habits for youth) and OnStar connected services.
The ’23 Suburban’s multimedia setup is rather fetching. The LS gets an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, voice recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a six-speaker sound system. The LT, RST, and Z71 has a customizable 10.2-inch touchscreen with Google built-in and a nine-speaker Bose audio system. The Premier and High Country are treated to a 10-speaker Bose with CenterPoint surround sound.
